About us

Rtambhara is a cultural forum for the promotion of performing and visual arts with an avowed vision to create cultural awareness among the youth. Adhering to the traditional values of the ancient dance form Bharatanatyam, the forum encourages creativity through other mediums of expression like Western Contemporary Dance, Martial arts and others.

Concept

The perennial nature of creation, preservation and destruction (srishti, sthiti and laya) is represented in the concept of the term “rtam”. The word Rtambhara, which invokes a sense of tala and laya, is a synonym for Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Universe and upholder of Truth. Adding creativity (bhava) to this provides a sense of perpetual creation along with preservation (tala) and destruction (laya). This principle pervades through all the creative endeavours of human imagination.

Genesis

The dedication and passion of Smt. Girija Ravindranath with support from like-minded associates, friends and parents of her students have resulted in establishing this Academy for the cause of spreading awareness of art forms. For the past 23 years Smt. Girija has been imparting not only the mere technique of Bharatanatyam to her students, but also the traditional and aesthetic ideologies with all its nuances, of her guru and mentor, Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale. Bharatanatyam compositions are embedded in religion and mythology. Smt. Girija has touched the hearts of her students in a spiritual way showing that dance is beyond these, thus opening their minds to a higher consciousness.

Values and Objectives

While adhering to the rigid frame work of ‘pure’ art forms, with emphasis on Bharatanatyam, the Academy will be open to explore the possibilities of other performing art forms, like Western Contemporary Dance, Kalari etc., along with vocal and instrumental music.

More than training in the art forms, it will be an on-going and perpetual strife to inculcate higher values and aesthetics to the students so as to help them discipline their mind and body, and make them peace loving and culturally rich citizens of the future.

It will be a constant endeavour to encourage the creativity of the students and to have a dance repertoire.

The Academy will be a platform
(a) to showcase its own productions
(b) to interact with other institutions with similar philosophy and objectives
(c) for its students to experience and learn from well known personalities in the art field and
(d) to expose the students to the world stage at large.
Over and above all, the Academy is intended to give a sense of belonging and recognition to all the students and also to those who have finished their Arangetram
